The Chief Inspector is responsible for:
- assisting the Chief Commissioner in drawing up policies, strategies and methodology for inspection of public authorities
- planning a programme of inspections to ensure that the Chief Commissioner's oversight functions are carried out to a meaningful level, that the frequency and depth of inspections meets the Chief Commissioner's requirements and that inspections are carried out by the appropriate officer of the agency concerned and their particular circumstances
- managing the work of the team of inspectors, ensuring inspections are carried out to a high standard and that high quality reports are produced with clear, logical and well judged recommendations and ensuring that any areas of concern identified by individual inspectors are brought to the attention of the relevant Commissioner promptly
- providing guidance to law enforcement agencies about the form inspections will take and the information that will be required from them.
