Advice and Guidance - Using The Statutory Powers

Advice
The examples which follow of advice and good practice are cited by way of illustration only: they should never be adopted unquestioningly.

Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services
In the local government world the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS) formerly LACOTS (http://www.lacors.gov.uk) have been prepared to organise training and offer advice on frequently asked questions.

Trading Standards Service at North Yorkshire
We understand that the Trading Standards Service at North Yorkshire (01609 766421) with support from LACORS has been developing an IT approach which helps the applicant and authorising officer identify the key issues. Copies are available from them for those who wish to use it.

They are prepared to make this available to others at cost and to keep under review according to need.

Association of Council Secretaries and Solicitors
The Association of Council Secretaries and Solicitors (http://www.acses.org.uk/index.htm) are also happy to play a role in supporting local authorities by whom their members are employed. In addition to a website, they have a network of branches covering all areas where members meet to share experience and information.

For the NHS, the NHS Counter Fraud Service explain the legislation and organise training (Contact NHS Executive Office: 020 7972 2505 or Freedom.MacKay@doh.gov.uk)

They have produced notes explaining the law, codes of practice, forms and procedures when dealing with fraud, corruption and other crime.
