About Us - Introduction

The OSC is a Tribunal Non Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Home Office. It was set up in 1999.

Our key objectives are to:

  • Promote an effective and ethical process for the authorisation of covert surveillance in accordance with legislation.
  • Provide public reassurance about the authorisation of covert surveillance.
  • Run our own operations efficiently and effectively.

The Chief Surveillance Commissioner reports to the Prime Minister and Scottish Ministers every year.
